Smoke Break

by SERGIK

Hip-Hop/Rap

Smoke Break" is a four-track EP — Hip-Hop / Lo-Fi Hip-Hop, 81–84 BPM. SERGIK built it as one room, meant to be played in order, start to finish. No intro cut, no interlude — four pieces of a single argument, each one answering the last. It opens on Smoke Break. The track doesn't announce itself — it arrives sideways, breakbeat running at high tempo, but the pressure lives in what it refuses to deliver. Stillness is the hook. The groove reaches back into UK rave lineage and soundsystem inheritance, treating bass not as a flourish but as something passed hand to hand across generations of Black British music-making — as essential as the room itself. At 2:44, it doesn't overstay. It sets the conditions and steps aside. On n On follows, and the architecture shifts beneath you. The tempo reads 84 BPM; the body clocks it closer to half that. Half-time sensibility in G# major, the one-drop temperament drawn long and unhurried — bass and delay doing all the talking while everything else steps back and waits. You feel the roots reggae and dub logic underneath: harmonic rhythm moving slow, emphasis landing on beats 2 and 4, the patience of sound-system democracy built into every bar. This is bass as social weight, the kind of low end that comes from migrant Britain's long-building traditions rather than any preset library. Smoke Break Rev plants its feet where the other cuts roam. Four-on-the-floor at 172 BPM in G minor — the kick commits fully, the 808 pitch-shifts against it, and the groove lives in that unresolved gap between them. This is endurance music: warehouse tempo, few harmonic events, the kind of patience pirate-radio UK developed over long broadcasts and longer nights. Paul Gilroy's Black Atlantic runs underneath — bass not as a genre marker but as a continuum, moving across scenes and borders without asking permission. The 808 doesn't decorate. It argues. Nimbus High closes the room. 81 BPM, A# minor, one-drop. The kick withholds on the one; the sub takes everything the kick leaves behind and grounds it. Minor-pentatonic sensibility, harmonic rhythm at its slowest, emphasis sitting on beats 2 and 4 with the kind of deliberate restraint that Rastafari and roots reggae traditions earned over decades. In a live room, people use that measured pulse to decide whether to dance, lean, or simply listen. The space is not empty — it works. At 3:07, it is the longest track on the EP and carries the closing weight exactly as long as the argument requires. Play it in order. Tracklist 1. Smoke Break 2. On n On 3. Smoke Break Rev 4.
